Decarburisation
occurs for example, when carbon is
burnt from the surface of steel during
the process of heat-treatment. Because
the decarburised surface layer can
influence the properties of the
finished product, it is important to
be able to analyse it.
Compared with traditional manual
techniques, Leica QDecarburisation
provides a significant improvement of
laboratory productivity. Not only does
it have greater sample throughput
capability and measurement
repeatability, but it is also, in its
automatic mode, inherently objective,
and therefore more accurate. Results
can be stored in an integrated
database, where a search facility can
quickly find the results of a
particular analysis using unique
information such as customer, specimen
type, data, operator, etc.
Leica QDecarburisation complies with
the following standards: ASTM E1077
DIN 50192 ISO 3887 JIS G0558.

A
phase in a material is
described as a region of
uniform contrast, associated
with a known constituent of
the specimen. Leica QPhase
identifies each phase by
contrast and automatically
calculates its area
percentage. Multiple phases
are identified by coloured
overlays and can be
simultaneously displayed for
the same field of view. A
variable image frame is
available to precisely adjust
the size of the field to be
measured. Identification and
measurement of multiple phases
within a field can be
performed in a fraction of a
second.
Results are accumulated over
multiple fields of view to
allow accurate
characterisation of the
specimen. According to a range
of published standards, QPhase
continuously reports the 95%
confidence interval and
relative accuracy, allowing
precise monitoring of the
measurement procedure. Using
optional motorisation of the
microscope stage and focus,
QPhase allows fully unattended
quantification of the
microstructure through
automated specimen scanning.
|
Confidence
in Conformity
Leica QPhase automatically
identifies each phase on the
basis of contrast,
irrespective of the type of
material concerned. By
identifying the appropriate
industry standard, the user
can be confident that the
analysis process conforms to
their particular laboratory
requirements.

Convenience and User
Configurable Report Formats
Following phase detection and
measurement, the phase
analysis results are presented
in both graphical and
statistical formats to suit
user preferences. Each field's
microstructure analysis raw
data is also displayed, for
advanced analysis of
anisotropy, intercepts, and
feature count. With optional
microscope stage automation,
each field may be

comprehensive selection of
analysis techniques, all of
which measure graphite
particles in a polished sample
on the basis of contrast,
irrespective of the type of
material concerned. By
identifying the appropriate
industry standard, the user

analysis process conforms to
their particular laboratory
requirements. Industry
Standards complied with: ASTM
A247-67 (1990) JIS G 5502* ISO

Methodology
Leica QNodules quickly and
reproducibly identifies,
measures, and classifies the
graphite microstructure. The
area and shape (ie roundness)
of each graphite particle in
the field of view is measured
and these values are then
automatically compared to
standard classes or to user
defined thresholds in order to
classify the size and form of
the graphite
Accurate,
Automatic Analysis
Nodule results are accumulated
over multiple fields of view
to allow fast, accurate
characterisation of many
hundreds of nodules in the
specimen. According to a range
of published standards,
QNodules continuously reports
the 95% confidence interval
and relative accuracy,
assuring precise monitoring of
the measurement procedure.
Using optional motorisation of
the microscope stage and
focus, QNodules allows fully
unattended quantification of
the microstructure through
