  Leica QCoating
Leica QCoating is a digital image analysis application available as a single module or as part of the Leica QMetals suite.
Leica QCoating is a digital image analysis application available as a single module or as part of the Leica QMetals suite. Leica QCoating rapidly identifies coatings on the surface of a specimen, measuring the thickness or width of a coating at multiple positions along a sample such as a layer of one metal applied to another to protect it, or a layer of paint.

Industry Standards
Leica QCoating offers the user a comprehensive selection of coating thickness analysis techniques, which identify variations in the width of the coating in a field on the basis of contrast, irrespective of the type of material concerned. By identifying the appropriate industry standard, the user can be confident that the analysis process conforms to their particular laboratory requirements. Leica QCoating conforms to these industry standards: ASTM B 487, BS 411, ISO 1463.

Measurement Methods
Leica QCoating offers three methods of measuring coating thickness: 1. Manually - where the user controls the mouse to draw lines across the coating 2. Semi-automatically - the coating is automatically detected, using the mouse the user indicates where to perform the measurement 3. Fully automatically - Leica QCoating both detects and measures the coating thickness.

Performs interactive and automated measurement of coating thickness.
Operates within the Leica Q550 MW Materials Workstation.
Leica QCoating Wizard guides the user through the application process.
Conformity to industry standards.
Database for convenient recall and statistical analysis.
User configurable report formats for presentation of results

Decarburisation occurs for example, when carbon is burnt from the surface of steel during the process of heat-treatment. Because the decarburised surface layer can influence the properties of the finished product, it is important to be able to analyse it.
Compared with traditional manual techniques, Leica QDecarburisation provides a significant improvement of laboratory productivity. Not only does it have greater sample throughput capability and measurement repeatability, but it is also, in its automatic mode, inherently objective, and therefore more accurate. Results can be stored in an integrated database, where a search facility can quickly find the results of a particular analysis using unique information such as customer, specimen type, data, operator, etc.
Leica QDecarburisation complies with the following standards: ASTM E1077 DIN 50192 ISO 3887 JIS G0558.

A phase in a material is described as a region of uniform contrast, associated with a known constituent of the specimen. Leica QPhase identifies each phase by contrast and automatically calculates its area percentage. Multiple phases are identified by coloured overlays and can be simultaneously displayed for the same field of view. A variable image frame is available to precisely adjust the size of the field to be measured. Identification and measurement of multiple phases within a field can be performed in a fraction of a second.
Results are accumulated over multiple fields of view to allow accurate characterisation of the specimen. According to a range of published standards, QPhase continuously reports the 95% confidence interval and relative accuracy, allowing precise monitoring of the measurement procedure. Using optional motorisation of the microscope stage and focus, QPhase allows fully unattended quantification of the microstructure through automated specimen scanning.
